Benefits Of Injectables Vs. Dermal Fillers

woman smiling

woman smilingAs an ExpertInjector™, I have dedicated a portion of my career to personally administering facial line and fold fillers and muscle relaxants. When performed by a plastic surgeon with a superior knowledge of facial beauty anatomy and aesthetics, cosmetic injectable combinations can provide what is known as a “liquid facelift”—and take 5-10 years off your appearance.  Injectable facial fillers and muscle relaxants each serve individual purposes.

An injectable “neuromodulator” such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, Xeomin®, or Dysport® can dramatically diminish fine lines and wrinkles by temporarily relaxing the muscles located beneath the skin so that they don’t contract as actively. Once these facial muscles are relaxed, the skin appears smoother, creating a younger-looking appearance. Maintaining treatments about three times a year helps to prevent resting lines from worsening and makes “worry lines” less visible.  In this fashion BOTOX® Cosmetic truly helps to prevent the signs of aging. Facial fillers, on the other hand, are designed to reverse the natural loss of soft tissue, fat, and muscle that can cause sunken or sagging facial features, to correct the “deflation of aging”. By restoring this lost volume to the tear troughs, temples, cheeks, “parentheses lines”, or the area around the mouth, fillers such as Radiesse®, Voluma® (for the “apple in the cheeks”), Belotero®, and Juvéderm® can create a youthful fullness, fuller lips and an oval face shape for a renewed and revitalized look. During your consultation, we can discuss your unique aesthetic concerns and create a customized take-home facial rejuvenation treatment plan utilizing the cosmetic injectables and other minimally invasive treatments that can best achieve your goals.

Who Should Administer My Injectables?

woman sitting smiling

woman sitting smilingFor over 26 years, Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgery has offered a wide range of cosmetic surgical procedures designed to minimize and reverse the signs of aging. While cosmetic surgery can provide beautiful, naturally appearing results, non-surgical treatments like injectables can often be an effective beauty alternative for those with mild to moderate aging concerns. In fact, injectables can be a highly beneficial beauty treatment option when used as a preventative measure, treating the first sign of wrinkles, fine lines, or loose skin seen in women and men from their 20s to their 50s. It is advantageous to start injectables at a younger age to prevent the development of resting frown lines. The combination of muscle relaxants with facial fillers can also enhance the age-reversing effects of facial cosmetic surgery.

When it comes to choosing a provider for your injectable treatment, the process can seem overwhelming. These days, everyone from dentists to podiatrists and gynecologists are administering injectables like BOTOX® Cosmetic and fillers. When you are deciding who is best qualified to administer your injectable treatment, keep in mind that only a plastic surgeon spends years of additional training focused on surgically reconstructing and rejuvenating the appearance of the face. Performing procedures such as a facelift or eye lift requires both technical skill and artistry, and an acute knowledge of facial anatomy. That’s why a plastic surgeon’s experience with facial beauty and aesthetics can dramatically enhance the results of your injectable treatment. Like any tool, they can create havoc in the wrong hands!

In addition, an ExpertInjector™, like Dr. Koumanis, is specially endorsed by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and New Beauty Magazine as a quality provider for these injectables. Visit www.expertinjector.org to confirm that Dr. Koumanis is the only expert injector so listed in the Capital District region and Upstate New York. Before your next injectable treatment, we recommend you research each provider’s knowledge and familiarity with facial anatomy and injectable safety before you make a decision. Dr. Steven Yarinsky of Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgery offers the advanced pain relief medications OFIRMEV and EXPAREL for long-lasting comfort after surgical procedures.

Saratoga Springs, NY – Dr. Steven Yarinsky, a plastic surgeon in Saratoga Springs, is committed to providing state-of-the-art plastic surgery care to those at Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgery. As part of his mission to help patients have a smooth recovery, he offers OFIRMEV™ and EXPAREL® pain medication to promote a more comfortable healing process. Dr. Yarinsky says these have been proven to significantly reduce postoperative discomfort, which can reduce the need for narcotics, and provide better overall pain management, making patient recovery a more pleasant experience.

OFIRMEV™ is an intravenous form of acetaminophen which is given to patients during cosmetic surgery, such as a breast or body contouring procedure. EXPAREL® is a single dose local analgesic that is administered directly to the target area for localized numbing and pain relief. Dr. Yarinsky explains that he injects the medication after surgery into the area that was operated on to provide long-lasting pain control. He says that while most other analgesics only last for eight hours or fewer, EXPAREL® can minimize discomfort for up to three days, which can be the most difficult time during recovery. The combination of using OFIRMEV™ and EXPAREL® helps speed patient discharge from his Joint Commission accredited surgical center and also hastens overall recovery from cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Yarinsky says that he utilizes OFIRMEV™ and EXPAREL® for a wide variety of plastic surgery procedures, including breast augmentation, breast lift, facelift, and tummy tuck surgery. He is pleased to be able to improve surgical recovery with OFIRMEV™ and EXPAREL® by reducing pain for such a long period of time. This helps patients avoid the need for much other supplemental pain medication. He emphasizes the innovative nature of the product, stating that it is one of the most revolutionary methods of postoperative pain relief in recent years. “Our patients tell me that they feel better than ever before and they have a more rapid recovery,” says Dr. Yarinsky.

Dr. Yarinsky encourages anyone considering plastic surgery to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to learn about their options. By doing so, he says patients can expect an enhanced level of care, with advanced pain relief options like OFIRMEV™ and EXPAREL®.

Improving Surgical Recovery with EXPAREL® and OFIRMEV™

Part of our mission as a Joint Commission accredited center for cosmetic surgery excellence is to provide patients with exceptional care before, during, and after treatment. One of the things patients fear the most is pain after surgery. Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgery, PC offers Ofirmev™ and Exparel® to promote postoperative comfort. Exparel® is a long acting local anesthetic that provides up to three days of pain relief, while most local anesthetics last eight hours or less. Exparel® can be used after any treatment that Dr. Dimitri Koumanis would normally use an analgesic or numbing agent to help minimize pain. Ofirmev™ is an intravenous form of Tylenol® (acetaminophen) is given to patients during their cosmetic surgery to significant reduce postoperative pain without the complications of narcotics. Cosmetic procedures that lend themselves to these new pain-relief medications include breast augmentation, breast lift, facelift, and tummy tuck.

Dr. Koumanis administers a localized dose of Exparel® into the target surgical area which numbs the area for a prolonged time providing continuous pain relief for up to 72 hours. The injection can control pain or discomfort that is experienced within the first few days after surgery without the need for much supplemental pain medication. Following this time period discomfort is typically very subtle and easier to tolerate. Ofirmev™ is given through the IV during a breast or body contouring procedure. It significantly reduces postoperative pain and decreases the need for narcotics. Patients have less narcotic-induced nausea and feel better. Therefore their discharge home and overall recovery are speeded after having their office procedure. No pain, big patient gain!

If you are considering plastic surgery and are curious if EXPAREL® and Ofirmev™ can be utilized for pain relief to help keep you as comfortable as possible, feel free to schedule a consultation with Dr. Koumanis where he can discuss your options in more detail.
