Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgeon’s Expert Advice on How to Prepare for a Mommy Makeover

Dr. Steven Yarinsky offers advice for women interested in Mommy Makeover surgery so they can best prepare for the procedures.

Dr. Steven Yarinsky, Medical Director of Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgery, offers medical, lifestyle, and recovery tips to prepare for Mommy Makeover cosmetic surgery.

Saratoga Springs, NY – Dr. Steven Yarinsky, a board-certified plastic surgeon in the Saratoga Springs and Albany area, takes pride in performing Mommy Makeover procedures to help mothers again feel confident and comfortable with their bodies. Restoring their pre-baby figure is a positive physical and emotional transformation for women after pregnancy and breastfeeding. After pregnancy and with significant weight loss, cosmetic surgery can improve physical changes in the body that occur to the waistline, breasts, buttocks, thighs, arms, and other regions. If a woman would like to enhance two or more areas of their body, their procedure is referred to as a Mommy Makeover.

Dr. Yarinsky has had extensive experience for over 30 years doing every procedure that may be part of a Mommy Makeover including breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, liposuction body contouring, rejuvenation of intimate areas, cosmetic injectables, and more. For women interested in pursuing this positively life-changing enhancement, Dr. Yarinsky suggests the following guidelines to help them prepare for their Mommy Makeover to have the best experience and achieve optimal results:

  • Choose a plastic surgeon with care: Dr. Yarinsky emphasizes the importance of choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon who is trained and experienced with doing Mommy Makeovers, who also is a member of The Aesthetic Society, the group of plastic surgeons who specialize in cosmetic surgery who hold to the highest surgical and safety standards. Patients should do their homework. Get referrals to a cosmetic plastic surgeon from friends, family members and one’s primary care physician or gynecologist. Visit the website of the surgeon(s) being chosen and see the Mommy Makeover patients’ before and after photos that they have posted. Read their Google reviews and patient testimonials. At the consultation visit, patients should be able to communicate and have a good rapport and feel comfortable with their plastic surgeon and their office staff. Dr. Yarinsky adds that the best cosmetic surgeons should provide thorough, detailed written and verbal pre-operative and post-operative instructions to assist with a successful recovery. That way patients are prepared with the information they need to achieve the best experience and outcome for their Mommy Makeover.
  • Complete a medical evaluation: Prior to having cosmetic plastic surgery, a medical evaluation and lab tests may be required to rule out any serious health conditions or issues that may interfere with anesthesia and compromise one’s surgical result and safe recovery. Depending upon the patient’s age and medical history, this may include getting chest x-rays, an EKG, and a letter of medical clearance from their primary medical provider.
  • Adjust medications and supplements: Dr. Yarinsky recommends eliminating the use of anti-inflammatory drugs, like aspirin and ibuprofen, and certain herbal supplements that can cause blood thinning and, therefore, increase the risk of bleeding complications. Weight loss medications such as semaglutides like Wegovy® should be stopped a month before cosmetic surgery.
  • Reach a healthy, stable weight: Dr. Yarinsky warns that significant weight fluctuations of more than 5-10 pounds following a Mommy Makeover can alter or destroy one’s results. For that reason he says prior to surgery it is best for patients to eat a balanced nutrient-rich diet, maintain a consistent exercise routine, and reach their long-term stable body weight.
  • Stop smoking and limit alcohol: Dr. Yarinsky requires his patients to quit smoking and vaping at least four weeks before and after surgery because the effects of tobacco compromise the wound healing process. Do not cheat with exposure to secondhand smoke. Additionally, patients should abstain from alcohol at least one week before surgery to prevent dehydration, permit proper blood clotting, and to avoid negative interactions with anesthesia, prescribed painkillers, and other medicines.
  • Find a trusted caregiver to help: Recovery after a Mommy Makeover can take several weeks during which time patients may have difficulty doing some of their regular activities. It is essential for them to arrange for help from family members, friends, or others who will assist them with meals and dressing, child and pet care, household tasks, lifting, driving, and cleaning. Having a caregiver’s help is necessary and extremely beneficial for the patient’s comfort and safe recovery and allows them to get adequate rest while recuperating.
  • Create a recovery area at home: Taking the time to prepare a comfortable and well-stocked recovery environment at home before having cosmetic surgery can support and hasten one’s recuperation and reduce potential physical strain.

Urgent Update: New Information Regarding Recalled Breast Implants

If you have McGhan-, Inamed-, or Allergan-branded textured gel or saline-filled breast implants that were recalled in July 2019 due to FDA recommendations, this blog is essential reading. The McGhan Corporation previously sold the recalled implants. Allergan purchased McGhan’s parent company Inamed in 2006. Recent developments have shed light on the risks associated with these implants, particularly the ones identified as having “Biocell texture.” The FDA initially advised against removal in 2019, but new findings from scientific research studies published in 2023 suggest a reconsideration is in order.

Increased Risks and Latest Research: The latest research indicates a more than threefold increase in the risk of developing breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) with the recalled implants compared to the data available in 2019. This alarming revelation emphasizes the importance of staying informed and taking proactive measures to address potential health risks.

Factors Influencing Risk: Certain factors contribute to an elevated risk of BIA-ALCL, including age greater than 46, more than 6 years since breast augmentation, and the presence of breast cancer genetic markers. Understanding these risk factors is crucial for making informed decisions about your health and well-being.

Recommendation for Action: Considering the updated information, it is highly recommended that individuals with the mentioned implants seek a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon such as Dimitri Koumanis, MD, who specializes in cosmetic surgery and breast augmentation. This will provide an opportunity for you to discuss the latest developments and address any concerns you may have.

Procedure Details: Implant removal, with or without replacement, is a much more comfortable process than the initial augmentation. The procedure is safely and usually performed in the office operating room facility at Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgery using local anesthesia and oral sedation, eliminating the preoperative medical screening  (such as chest x-ray and EKG) needed for general anesthesia, and the added expense. However, general anesthesia is available at an added cost for those patients who choose to be completely asleep. The recovery process is described by most women as swift, with minimal pain compared to their original augmentation.

Insurance Coverage: It’s important to note that insurance does not typically cover this procedure. You will receive a fee quote during your consultation, and financing options if needed, allowing you to make informed decisions about the financial aspects of the recommended procedure.

In conclusion, staying informed about the latest developments regarding recalled breast implants is crucial for your health and well-being. If you have the mentioned implants, it’s recommended to schedule a consultation to discuss the updated information and address any concerns. Taking proactive steps now can contribute to your overall long-term safety and peace of mind. To schedule an appointment, call (518) 583-4019 on weekdays. Your health is of the utmost importance.

How Does a Lip Flip Work?

Many people struggle with the appearance of thin lips and wish they had a fuller pout. Fortunately, a variety of minimally invasive lip enhancement procedures are available to help them improve their lip appearance without having to undergo surgery. While dermal fillers like Restylane® Silk and JUVÉDERM Ultra and VOLBELLA® XC can restore lost volume and smooth out radiating “barcode-type” lip wrinkles, neurotoxins like BOTOX® Cosmetic injected into your upper lip can provide a different type of aesthetic improvement known as a “lip flip.”

A lip flip is a cosmetic treatment that rotates upward or “flips” your upper lip for a fuller appearance, without actually increasing the volume of your lip. This non-surgical procedure utilizes small injections of muscle relaxers like BOTOX® Cosmetic just above the border of your upper lip. The orbicularis oris muscle, which shapes the mouth and lips and allows you to purse your lips, is relaxed and the lip line rolls upward and outward. This creates a subtle enhancement where more of the pink of your upper lip is visible. Lip flip treatment also benefits patients with gummy smiles, as less of the upper teeth and gums are exposed when smiling. You may notice mild weakness when pursing your lips or sucking on a straw lasting a few weeks after treatment.

The lip flip is a quick procedure, usually taking a couple of minutes. Results may be seen as early as two days after injections, but the full effect is seen by two weeks after treatment. Considering your mouth undergoes significant movement throughout the day with talking, eating, and smiling, results from a lip flip have been shown to last two to six months before a touch-up or retreatment is needed.

At Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgery, Dr. Dimitri Koumanis can help patients achieve their desired lip aesthetic through multiple non-surgical procedural options. Dr Koumanis is the only Albany and Capital District region certified “Expert Injector” by NewBeauty magazine and personally does all injectable treatments at Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgery, PC and at our Saratoga MediSpa. Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgeon Shares Six Facts to Know Before Having a Labiaplasty

Plastic Surgeon in Saratoga Springs Highlights Six Things to Consider Before Undergoing Labiaplasty

Steven Yarinsky, MD, FACS, a Saratoga Springs- and Albany-area plastic surgeon with over 30 years of experience in feminine intimate cosmetic surgery and vaginal rejuvenation procedures, shares insight for patients considering labiaplasty.

Saratoga Springs, NY – According to Albany-area plastic surgeon Steven Yarinsky, MD, FACS, vaginal rejuvenation surgery is a major life decision that should be considered with great care. While many women desire to contour, reshape, and tighten their intimate areas due to childbirth, hormonal changes, weight fluctuations, or the natural course of aging, Dr. Yarinsky stresses that it is essential for patients interested in these procedures to understand their options. “This way,” he says, “patients can properly prepare for cosmetic surgery and be able to identify what bothers them about their anatomy that they would like to modify or improve.”

Dr. Yarinsky, who performs the full breadth of cosmetic surgery in addition to female intimate surgery, states that the most popular vaginal rejuvenation surgery offered at his practice is labiaplasty. While this procedure generally targets treating either the labia majora (outer lips) or labia minora (inner lips), Dr. Yarinsky can combine a variety of advanced techniques to address concerns in both areas at once. Labia can stretch, tear, and enlarge over the years, leading to asymmetry and/or excess skin. Many women have congenital or inherited long labia minora. “A woman’s concern with her appearance can be both embarrassing and physically uncomfortable,” Dr. Yarinsky says. He has put together the following list of facts to help patients prepare for labiaplasty:

1. Labiaplasty is not always a cosmetic surgery.

Although some women choose to have a labiaplasty only to improve the appearance of their labia, this is not always the case. Many women who have long labia minora or excess tissue or skin may not be able to wear tighter clothes, exercise, have intercourse, or even sit down without having significant discomfort and embarrassment. Enlarged labial tissue can also cause chafing and irritation. Many patients, says Dr. Yarinsky, choose to have a labiaplasty to treat both functional and aesthetic concerns.

2. Labiaplasty scars, with the proper plastic surgery technique, are usually minimal.

Dr. Yarinsky urges patients not to let the fear of excessive scarring keep them from undergoing labiaplasty. Although some labiaplasty techniques, such as linear edge trimming, often leave more visible and potentially painful scars in their wake, Dr. Yarinsky’s technique of double wedge resection carefully places each incision within the creases and folds of the vagina to hide scars and keep the labia looking as natural as possible. These hidden scars soften and usually fade to a flesh color within approximately a year.

3. There is no specific age requirement for labiaplasty.

While the majority of women who seek labiaplasty want to reduce the effects of age, weight fluctuations, or childbirth, many women are born with disproportionately large or elongated labia minora. Dr. Yarinsky has treated adolescents as young as 15, but he emphasizes the procedure must be their decision (and there is no external motivating force, such as a parent who wants their daughter to have it done). Of course, those under the age of 18 are considered minors and need permission from a parent or guardian.

4. Recovery may take longer than you might expect.

Because labiaplasty is a highly customizable procedure which can include several different methods, the precise timeline for recovery can vary. That said, Dr. Yarinsky advises his patients to refrain from having intercourse, using tampons, performing strenuous exercise, or otherwise placing pressure on the perineum (groin region) for 8 to 10 weeks after surgery. He also encourages patients to strictly adhere to their personalized aftercare instructions for safe recuperation. Complications like wound edge separation or poor healing may result from resuming activities.

5. Touch-ups are sometimes necessary.

The results of labiaplasty when the procedure is correctly performed are usually “one and done.” An intimate area of the body that was bothersome is no longer an issue and women have a lifelong improvement in their self-esteem. Although labia minora will not “regrow” after they are trimmed, vaginal deliveries and aging can cause labial tissue to stretch once more. In such cases, Dr. Yarinsky often recommends ThermiVa®, a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment designed to tighten vaginal and labial tissue using radiofrequency energy. He is the only plastic surgeon or doctor located within 100 miles of the Albany and Capital District region who offers ThermiVa®.

6. Labiaplasty recovery is not known to be especially painful.

Dr. Yarinsky says women may shy away from labiaplasty because it sounds uncomfortable. In reality, however, most women who have a labiaplasty have found it to be minimally painful. Patients are sedated throughout the procedure or can choose to have their procedure asleep using general anesthesia. While post-surgical discomfort is not typically intense, Dr. Yarinsky prescribes pain medication for those who need it. Most women soon convert to only taking Tylenol® during their recovery.

Dr. Yarinsky encourages all patients who have questions about labiaplasty to bring them up during their consultation. “This type of procedure can be difficult to talk about,” he adds, “but it is important to be informed about the available techniques and the preparation before and recovery after their procedure.”

Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgery Practice Awarded Accreditation For Office-Based Surgery from The Joint Commission for Seventh Time

Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgeon Receives Accreditation by The Joint Commission

Dr. Steven Yarinsky, board-certified plastic surgeon and Medical Director of Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgery, PC, has once again earned accreditation by The Joint Commission — an organization globally recognized for healthcare accreditation — for office-based surgery at his Albany practice.

Saratoga Springs, NY — Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgery, PC has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for its on-site operating room, marking the seventh time the practice has achieved accreditation for office-based surgery since it was first certified in 2003. This conveys that board-certified plastic surgeon and Medical Director Steven Yarinsky, MD, along with his medical team, have demonstrated continuous compliance with the high-performance standards set by The Joint Commission, which also awards accreditation to many hospitals in the United States. Having maintained their status since 2003, the seven-time accreditation demonstrates Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgery’s commitment to providing safe, high-quality patient care.

The facility at Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgery, PC underwent a rigorous onsite review on May 20, 2022 and received notice granting another three-year term of accreditation on August 11, 2022. During the unannounced visit, a Joint Commission physician-reviewer evaluated compliance with office-based surgery standards spanning several areas, including: emergency management, environment of care, infection prevention and control, leadership, medication management, and OSHA compliance. Other areas evaluated during the review include patient education and training, proper monitoring of patients during procedures that involve deep sedation or anesthesia, and post-operative care plans.

Founded in 1951, The Joint Commission is the oldest and largest healthcare organization in the U.S. devoted to setting rigorous standards of quality and providing safety accreditations. The Joint Commission’s standards are developed in consultation with healthcare experts and providers, measurement experts, and patients. Recommendations for quality improvement are based on scientific literature and expert consensus to help healthcare organizations measure, assess, and improve performance. The accreditation process includes a surveyor’s onsite observations and interviews. Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgery, PC is the only office-based surgical facility in the Albany Capital District region currently accredited by The Joint Commission.

“As a private accreditor, The Joint Commission surveys health care organizations to protect the public by identifying deficiencies in care and working with those organizations to correct them as quickly and sustainably as possible,” says Mark Pelletier, RN, MS — chief operating officer of Accreditation and Certification Operations, and chief nursing executive at The Joint Commission. “We commend Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgery, PC for its continuous quality improvement efforts in patient safety and quality of care.”

Dr. Yarinsky performs all facial and body contouring procedures at his accredited office facility. “Our patients appreciate the relaxing atmosphere as well as the privacy, safety, comfort, and state-of-the-art care we provide. Our surveys show that patients prefer to have their cosmetic procedure done at our office facility,” Yarinsky emphasizes. “The years of the COVID-19 pandemic have created unprecedented challenges to maintaining a safe environment of care in our office. Our Joint Commission affiliation has assisted us in developing and instituting protocols and methods to keep our staff and patients healthy. We were able to continue to provide cosmetic surgery services when area hospitals were forced to close their operating rooms.”

Nationwide, the number of surgical procedures performed in physician offices and ambulatory surgery centers surpasses those performed in hospitals. “Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgery, PC is thrilled to receive The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for the seventh time, confirming we are successfully accomplishing our goal of providing safe and effective surgical care to our patients,” added Dr. Yarinsky. “Our staff strives to continuously improve its processes to ensure our patients receive the highest quality of care possible. Our high quality of care is reflected by our happy patients’ online five-star reviews.”

How Can I Fix Sagging Breasts?

Model wearing a white braBreasts begin to droop and become saggy in response to a variety of factors, including pregnancy, breastfeeding, genetics, weight fluctuations, hormonal changes, and age-related skin laxity. Although breast drooping—also called ptosis—is quite common, it can be aesthetically displeasing and negatively impact a woman’s figure and confidence. If you are dissatisfied with the shape, projection, or volume of your breasts, our Saratoga Springs plastic surgeon—Dimitri Koumanis, MD—offers several procedures that can restore a more youthful breast appearance.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

A breast lift is designed to firm and tighten the skin of the breasts to elevate the position of the nipples and areolae (the pigmented areas located around the nipples) and improve breast projection. Excess skin is removed while the remaining tissues are tightened and “lifted” to a higher position on the chest wall. The areolas can also be repositioned or reduced in size, if needed, to improve horizontal symmetry and create a more balanced appearance. A breast lift is often the ideal choice for those who wish to address sagging skin but who are otherwise happy with the size of their breasts.

Breast Lift with Implants

A breast lift with implants combines a traditional mastopexy with breast augmentation in order to restore or add volume to the breasts while simultaneously addressing sagging or drooping skin. During your consultation, Dr. Yarinsky can help you select the optimal size and type of implant for your aesthetic goals. He fully customizes each procedure to produce the most proportionate and natural-looking figure enhancement possible.

Breast Reduction

A breast reduction is typically recommended for those who struggle with overly large, heavy, and/or severely ptotic (droopy) breasts. This may also be done unilaterally to balance breasts that have different volumes. Whereas a breast lift is primarily designed to address excess skin, a reduction removes both excess skin and fatty tissues in order to lighten the breasts and reduce their overall size. For many women, a breast reduction can restore comfort and confidence by reducing breast sagging while creating a more balanced and proportionate appearance.

Can I Fix Drooping Breasts Without Surgery?

While some sources claim that certain non-surgical treatments may be able to reduce breast sagging, the truth is that these methods rarely produce significant results—or any results at all. While some women may see minor improvements with weight loss, pectoral exercises, or collagen therapies, breast surgery remains the most effective and long-lasting solution for treating sagging breasts.
