What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a rejuvenating skin procedure that utilizes small, sterilized needles to create micro-wounds in the skin. This process stimulates the body’s natural healing process, triggering the production of new collagen and elastin from specialized cells located in your skin called fibroblasts. As this occurs over the course of several weeks, the treated area of your skin gradually becomes smoother and more evenly toned. Fine wrinkles can be reduced or eliminated.

How Does the Secret™ RF Microneedling System Work?

For patients with more advanced skin damage, the Secret™ RF system by Cutera may be recommended for skin rejuvenation. This innovative device delivers fractional radiofrequency energy to different skin layers to target each patient’s individual concerns. The addition of RF to the microneedling process provides a superior rejuvenation as it produces heat that reaches from the dermis to the deeper subdermal tissue.

Commonly used on the face, chest, and body, Secret™ RF can effectively improve skin tone and texture while addressing more complex needs, such as stretch marks. Secret™ RF is considered a more powerful microneedling option, allowing patients to achieve optimal results with fewer treatment sessions. A series of three to four microneedling treatments is typically recommended, with one treatment every four to six weeks. Patients can return to their normal routine soon after each Secret™ RF treatment, as downtime is usually minimal.

The process is most often performed on the face and neck, but it can be performed virtually anywhere on the body, including the arms, knees, legs, trunk, and hips. Our microneedling systems employ tools that are available in multiple widths and needle lengths. This allows our team to fully customize each patient’s procedure and takes into account the individual’s skin thickness to be more efficient, cost effective, and beneficial.

What Does the Microneedling Procedure Involve?

Prior to your microneedling treatment, the skin of the target area will be cleansed, and a numbing cream is usually applied to minimize discomfort. As the microneedling process begins, the Secret™ RF handheld device will be guided across the target area, using a controlled stamping motion. The Secret™ RF procedure adds radiofrequency energy to the microneedling process which boosts collagen production. The microneedling procedure is usually completed within 30-60 minutes, but this may vary based on the size of the treated area.

What Can I Expect After Microneedling?

For the first four to six hours after your microneedling treatment, your skin may appear red and slightly swollen. This should gradually fade over time, often subsiding completely within the first 24 hours. Makeup can be applied as soon as one hour following treatment. Sun exposure should be avoided as your skin heals, and sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher should be worn to minimize the risk of hyperpigmentation. When Will I See My Microneedling Results?

Most patients can see improvement after a single treatment with the Secret™ RF system, but multiple sessions are usually recommended (typically three to four monthly treatments) to achieve optimal rejuvenation results. The treated skin should continue to improve over time as the body’s natural healing process takes effect. This allows patients to gradually achieve healthier skin that looks more even with fewer lines, has better texture and feels smoother.
